A thousand years in the future, a cataclysmic conflict nearly destroyed the world and temporarily ruined our podcast’s audio. The story of 2018’s Mortal Engines starts here, with humanity fighting for survival while living on mobile metropolises known as “Traction Cities.” As an apex predator in this goofy apocalypse, London rolls around and devours other wheeled settlements for resources. A young woman named Hester Shaw enters London in its latest meal and enacts her plan to assassinate the historian Thaddeus Valentine. Tom Natsworthy, a museum apprentice and love of “ancient” tech, unwittingly ruins Hester’s plot and is expelled from the city along with her. Stranded in the wilderness, Hester and Tom must work together to evade bloodthirsty scavengers and a monstrous cyborg. Meanwhile, Valentine takes London in a new direction, determined to destroy one of world’s last stationary cities. To that end, he is working to rebuild a doomsday weapon that only Hester’s late mother had the knowledge to stop. You’d think that about covers the plot, but there’s still two whole acts left. This is Sinister Six, after all.
